An End to the Journey,
or Where We've Been and Why We're Going
Over the past few months, as we've been asked about our upcoming season, we've revealed our worst kept secret:
My Name Is Rachel Corrie was Emigrant Theater's final production.
We want to acknowledge that to Emigrant Theater you've given your time, your talent, your wisdom and your dollars- in contributions and at the box office. Here, we can only begin to express our gratitude. Many of you have been there since we first gathered at Homewood Studios that February night to launch this venture. Many of you shivered with us in the filthy Uptown garage we converted for our first production. Many of you craned your necks to see Tallgrass Gothic in a Northeast warehouse. Many of you felt nicely disoriented when the Guthrie welcomed us warmly and with more comfortable seats for Blue Door last year.
When people see that Emigrant Theater closed in 2009, some will assume this small company was a victim of the recession; that's not the case. After five years and two dozen productions, readings and commissions, we've decided to end this leg of our journeys. As we've talked about what our next steps could be- as a company and as people with still growing dreams- we decided it's time to move on to new adventures. Having named this organization and founded it on the idea of journeying, we take it to heart.
Workhaus Collective placed a notice for their next production in our program for My Name Is Rachel Corrie. The work of producing new plays goes on full force in the Twin Cities, with Workhaus, at Open Eye where we produced Rachel Corrie, and with many others. We hope you'll continue to support it.
You're sure to note, of course, our final show was not created by a playwright, nor was the source material intended for the stage. We chose My Name Is Rachel Corrie because of our mission to explore perspectives of the American identity by locating influences that shape individuality within a larger social order- and by rooting that exploration in the work being done by those who live with us.
Whether you've been there every step of the way, for a few or for just a final step, we give our thanks. We've always said that a journey is nothing if no one takes it- thank you for being there, and for being here. We'll see you on the next journey.
With all deserved gratitude,
Matt DiCintio & Jess Finney
