Mission

Emigrant Theater is a not for profit organization located in the Twin Cities dedicated to creating performance that sheds light on the American identity. We are committed to circulating ideas, demonstrating how those ideas effect social change, and investigating the forms that convey the ideas.

Our mission is to:

Explore perspectives of the American identity by locating influences that shape individuality within a larger social order;

Foster the ingenuity of the American voice by providing a home for those who confront the expected, marshal the unexpected, and fuse the two;

Champion living playwrights whose work embodies these aspirations.

Emigrant Theater seeks to accomplish these goals with a wide variety of methods, including commissions for emerging playwrights, adapters, and translators; alliances with local community and community-based organizations to whom our mission is in service; the use of alternative spaces that enhance our projects’ resonance; collaborations with artists of non-dramatic media; contributions to the Twin Cities reputation for new work by sponsoring readings, workshops, and co-productions.
